Last year’s Ryder Cup most underrated storylines was the role Tiger Woods as assistant captain.
No one will ever really understand the kind of influence he had on the team, but it is likely to have been strong enough.
And why not? The player from America in their late 20s and early 30s revere him. If one has to know in detail, then check what Justin Thomas said about him recently? They require direction and advice from Big Cat.
So now, it should be exciting that Woods is planning is coming back into the center of the golf world as the championship Presidents Cup is approaching. The event Presidents Cup is scheduled to take place at the end of September and it will feature the best of 12 on the U.S. side competing with the beat 12 from all non-European countries. (more…)
Various sports have had certain stars whose performances, records and achievements eventually became the standard.
Basketball had the spectacular Michael Jordan, baseball had the brilliant Ken Griffey Jr.,and soccer had Brazilian legend Pele.
For a long time, Tiger Woods has been the shining light of the golfing world. He recently announced that he underwent another surgery – his fourth in three years as he battles back spasms. The immediate effect is that even his most ardent fans would not see him in action for the rest of the year despite the surge of hope last year. Woods has not featured in four official PGA Tour rounds since August 2015. He had his last win on the Tour in 2013 but he is now a shadow of his former self.
Now when setbacks, injuries, and issues come up, some dismiss the golfer as a goner while the rest remain sympathetic and hopeful of a comeback. His record since 2009 seems to be eroding the legacies he set earlier. His greatness is rubbished increasingly and there is no excitement around his name. He is now the poster boy (or man) for staying past your prime as an athlete. (more…)
Steve Stricker has a bad news for those who are eager to see Tiger Woods in the upcoming PGA Tour competition.
Steve Stricker, the caption of the Presidents Cup, he is also one of the closest friends of Woods on Tour, confirmed that Woods is still not ok with his back problem. According to the text shared between these two professionals, the Golf Channel has confirmed that Woods is still dealing with back problems and he has been through with multiple surgeries.
Stricker said “Woods is working hard to get recover from the problem as soon as possible, but I don’t feel like he is physically doing that well. It is very obvious that he will first work on his fitness before making a comeback to compete in the tournament. Thus, it will take some more time, for Woods to start playing the tournaments.”
After the withdrawal from the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Woods has not played any game. In the Omega Dubai Desert Classic he shoots an opening-round 77 and after that canceled his plan to start at the Honda Classic in Florida and Genesis Open in California giving the back spasms a reason. (more…)
Saturday afternoon last weekend, had seen Woods ring up seven birdies with three accompanying bogeys and one double to close at 2-under par 70.
And if not for some scratchy lay over the closing holes, his final score would have been better, thus putting him into strong contention to win.
However, Woods has been able to exceed most reasonable expectations, given his return from his time off after back surgeries had kept him out of the game for a 15 month period. This saw him miss out on cuts at the British Open, U.S. Open and the PGA.
During an appearance afterwards at the NBC Booth, Woods had said,
“Probably the biggest surprise for me as a player who has taken time off in the past has been finding the flow early in my rounds. For three straight days I’ve gotten off to great starts,”
“Overall, I’m so happy to be back out here and competing against these guys. It’s been a tough road to get to this point. I’ve missed it.” (more…)
Tiger Woods might have been out of the active golfing rounds for a while now, but he has found other ways to stay with the game.
For instance, he was vice captain of the US team when they competed in the last Ryder Cup tournament. This stint was a successful one with players like Fowler backing him up, stating that the motivation and support he provided helped a lot and made a difference to the players.
The same stint is now being carried forward. He has been named vice captain for Davis Love’s team. This is for the event being played out at Hazeltine in the state of Minnesota. Indeed, it might be great for the team, but he still wishes to be back as a player. This was evident when he lined up with the star players on the course for the official photograph to be taken. This is the standard ritual and was being conducted before the biggest tournament in golf was about to begin its 41st edition. When he stood along with Ryan Moore in the back row and was told to step away as he was not playing, he gave a little laugh to hide his humiliation. (more…)
